Can You Use Tosibox Lock with Double NAT?

Purple Flower

The short answer: It’s possible — but not ideal. Here’s why.

When a Tosibox Lock is used behind multiple routers, or “Double NAT”, the system has to translate network addresses twice. This can break remote connections, delay VPN access, or block the Tosibox Key entirely.

The two ways your Tosibox Lock can work:

1) Lock Mode (Router/Firewall):

  • The Lock creates its own protected network.
  • Devices plug directly into it or connect via WLAN.
  • Works best when you control the network — like a dedicated panel or site install.
  • Not great behind another firewall (causes Double NAT).
2) Client Mode (Network Switch)

  • The Lock joins an existing network instead of routing traffic.
  • Uses the LAN ports — not the WAN port.
  • Perfect when you’re working inside customer networks or IT-managed environments.
  • Lets you reach connected devices remotely without changing existing network settings.

Why Client Mode is the better option:

  • Avoids Double NAT issues — simpler and cleaner setup.
  • Plays nice with corporate firewalls and DHCP.
  • Easier for IT teams to manage and approve.
  • Supports Tosibox’s new Internet fallback feature (firmware 5.4.0+).

Quick setup tips

  • Log in to your Tosibox Lock’s admin interface.
  • Go to Network ? LAN.
  • Switch the protocol to DHCP Client or Static IP (if no DHCP available).
  • Unplug the WAN cable — only use LAN ports.
  • Save and reboot.

Pro tip: Configure and test fallback connections (WAN, WLAN, or cellular) before switching modes.

When NAT still helps

If you manage multiple sites with identical IP ranges, enabling 1:1 NAT lets you connect to each location simultaneously without IP conflicts. Each site keeps the same local setup, but Tosibox translates the addresses automatically for remote access.

Key takeaway

  • Double NAT = Trouble.
  • Client Mode = Smoother, simpler, and safer.
  • NAT = Useful only when you need identical networks to coexist.
