Design for Control, Not Just Flow

Many HVAC systems run fine at startup but develop issues later due to poor valve selection.

This blog highlights how using the wrong valve...especially in control applications like AHUs and reheat coils, can lead to instability, callbacks, and added costs.

By asking early whether an application requires control or just flow, contractors can choose globe valves where needed and avoid problems before they start.

 Globe Valves

Why Globe Valves Matter?

The Real Problem Isn’t the Setup — It’s the Selection

These are some of the most common applications where this becomes a problem:
Air Handling Units (AHUs) - AHUs operate across a wide range of loads.
If your valve can’t handle that range smoothly, you’ll see instability quickly.

Reheat Coils - Low-load control matters here (a lot).
Small changes in flow can have a big impact on space temperature.

Systems Designed for “Good Enough” -
This is where callbacks are born.
What seems acceptable during startup becomes a headache during real operation.

What we’re seeing: Applications that should have started with a globe valve… but didn’t.

Why Globe Valves Make the Difference?

Globe valves are designed for modulation and precision control.

That means:
 TSmoother response across varying loads
Better stability at low flow conditions
Reduced hunting and oscillation
More consistent temperature control

In short: They do what control applications actually require.

Fixing control issues after installation isn’t just frustrating — it’s expensive

Pro Tip:

Getting control right upfront is always cheaper — and easier — than fixing it later.

Often, the only real fix is replacing the valve that should have been selected in the first place..

The Cost of getting it wrong:
  • Extra labor for troubleshooting and tuning
  • Repeat site visits
  • Lost time and margin
30-Second Gut CHeck:
  • Will this system operate at part load?
  • Does control stability matter in this application?

Remember:

Start with the right valve, and you won’t have to come back and fix it later
