Sight glasses, observation ports, and peep-sights may sound similar, but they serve very different purposes depending on the application. Choosing the right one helps technicians monitor water levels, inspect burner flames, and verify refrigerant flow or moisture conditions.

Why It Matters

When someone asks for a “sight glass,” they could be referring to several completely different products. The right answer depends on what they are trying to monitor: water level, flame condition, refrigerant flow, oil level, or moisture content.

Simple rule: Before selecting a sight glass, start with the application. A boiler gauge glass, burner observation port, and refrigeration sight glass are not interchangeable.

Refrigeration Sight Glass Used to monitor refrigerant flow, level, and moisture conditions.

1. Sight Glass for Water Gauges

The most common sight glass in a boiler room is the gauge glass. This is the cylindrical glass tube installed between two water gauge valves and used to visually inspect the water level inside a boiler or tank.

This small piece of glass plays a major role in boiler safety. If the water level drops too low, boiler tubes can overheat, warp, sag, or fail. A clear, readable gauge glass gives technicians a quick visual reference so they can confirm the system is operating where it should be.

One of the most common options we sell is the SCHOTT DURAN Redline 58 series. The red line running the length of the glass creates an optical effect that makes the liquid level easier to read at a glance.

Heavy-Duty Gauge Glass

For tougher applications, heavy-duty gauge glass options offer thicker walls and higher pressure ratings, making them better suited for vibration, heat, or more demanding environments.

Measuring tip: Measure from center-of-nut to center-of-nut, top to bottom. This helps ensure the replacement glass has enough bite on both ends.

2. Burner Observation Ports

A burner observation port, sometimes called a peep-sight, is a completely different product from a boiler gauge glass. Instead of a cylindrical tube, this is typically a flat viewing window mounted into the burner housing so a technician can visually inspect the flame.

These ports may be circular or rectangular and are commonly inserted into a threaded connection or installed on the surface with screws. They are built for environments where high heat and rapid temperature changes are expected.

Auburn observation ports are a strong example. Their one-piece construction helps them remain leak-proof under high pressure and temperature, while Pyrex viewing glass helps withstand rapid temperature swings.

3. Refrigeration Sight Glasses

Refrigeration sight glasses are used on chillers, condensers, and refrigerant circuits. While they may look similar to burner observation ports, they serve a different purpose.

These sight glasses often include a colored ball or moisture-sensitive element. They help monitor refrigerant level, flow, oil level, and moisture content. Moisture is especially important because it can lead to acid formation inside the system and cause long-term damage.

Don’t ignore a color change. A moisture indicator changing color can be an early warning sign that the system needs attention.
